As the title implies, I have decided to have a second blog.
I love all things beautiful and silly and irrelevant. and this blog here, fulfills all of those
I love music, without it I would find this world almost unlivable. Art, movies books and television shows, are second to music, it would be a horrible existence without any of these.
Anything that pleases my eyes, be it cute little animals, flowers, nature, fashion, decoration, fills me with as much excitement as a 7 year old in a toy store.
And those who really know me from the SP forums—and from here if you read between the lines and maybe not so much between the lines—know of my adoration for a certain tall, skinny, puffy hair, gorgeous voice/singer from Ireland.
But, there is also a very serious side to me, and that has to do with politics. And history. So, in the spirit of spreading information and the why’s to many questions, I have decided to have a second blog which will be all about politics and the in and outs of everything related to government and history, when that history is important pertaining to politics and government.
I am of the belief that the more informed a citizen is, the more of a threat that citizen is to the status quo and to the manipulation of the masses.

“As an atheist, I see nothing “wrong” in believing in a God. I don’t think there is a God, but belief in him does no harm. If it helps you in any way, then that’s fine with me. It’s when belief starts infringing on other people’s rights when it worries me. I would never deny your right to believe in a God. I would just rather you didn’t kill people who believe in a different God, say. Or stone someone to death because your rulebook says their sexuality is immoral. It’s strange that anyone who believes that an all-powerful all-knowing, omniscient power responsible for everything that happens, would also want to judge and punish people for what they are.”—
got loads done last week including a very new song (written last tuesday) which is called ‘make this go on forever’ (it’s not about tv studio funding for j.j.abrams, although let’s hope it does) and is sounding gigantic. doesn’t necessarily make it good i know…
we’ve also recorded two of nathan’s songs which are marvellous.
we also have recorded two songs for charity records. the first is an album of songs for a kids charity record which is being put together by belle and sebastian. i did a cover of the ricky wilde (kim wilde’s brother) song called ‘i am an astronaut’ (this was recorded when he was ten years old in the 1970’s, he went onto write most of her hits, ‘kids in america’ and all that). it has the line “i am a polar bear” in it so i guess it’s appropriate, not that i’m actually a polar bear. should be out next year. the other song we’re doing this weekend. it’s a john lennon covers album for amnesty. we’re covering isolation.
thanks for the album names. i think. ha. also that spice girls/boys picture is just wrong. wow! don’t have great confidence about my own appearence but that’s the first time i’ve ever been reviled by myself. ha. the world has to hope i’m not a closet cross dresser. there’s something inherently wrong with women’s clothes and hairy feet (i’m part hobbit) and i’m not about to start waxing. so the world remains safe, for now.
i hope you all have a great first few weeks in november and i’ll post when we’re through our first week in ireland.
I will post the link here because after he was done with this, he remained in the forum and replied to some of the members, it goes back and forth for a few pages. (reading it all again, and he goes on even after saying goodbye, stay with it)
at the end of the third week in the studio and things are going great. we’ve completed (minus vocals which we’ll do at the end) eight songs and they’re sounding great (i’ll put the trumpet away now). most of the titles will change as i’m still tinkering with lyrics so to give you song names now would just be confusing. one that hasn’t changed is chasing cars which we played on our last u.s tour and the shows we did with u2 and in ireland, so some of you may know it. it’s sounding pretty big.
the whole thing is bigger and bolder except the quiet ones which are as fragile as sugar paper. garret’s doing an amazing job and we’re as focused as we’ve ever been. paul’s bass is terrifying (in a good way) and jonny’s drums, well we don’t call him thunderclap for nothing, or at all but if we did it’d be appropriate.
i know the more i post it probably makes recording sound like a saga but it’s really not. we’re working hard and very happy and i just want you guys to be up to date.
i thought as well you might like to know what we’re listening to at the moment. if not look away now.
the album leaf - in a safe place. an amercian pianist called jimmy lavelle making music in iceland with the guys from sigur ros. really really lovely.
amusement parks on fire - amusement parks on fire. from nottingham and just ferociously beautiful. the line “straight from the camera into my heart” on ‘venus in cancer’ gets me every time.
the russian futurists - our thickness. went on a class outing (don’t worry we all held hands in pairs when we crossed the road) last night to see four tet play nearby and along with caribou the russian futurists were supporting. all were great but i’d never even heard of these guys before. they’re canadian. an upbeat version of the earlies.
cat power - you are free. still a great record. re-discovered it the other day.
stars - set yourself on fire. again canadian (canada’s music sence is awesome at the moment: metric, broken social scene, arcade fire, raised by swans, ron sexsmith, celine dion…) this record was engineerd/produced by the engineer we’re working with right now, tom mcfall. ageless beauty is one of the most gorgeous tunes i’ve heard in a while. i do say that a lot though…it is though.
hears a list of some more as i’ve got to go and do a guitar now,
saul williams - saul williams the rogers sisters - three fingers the beatles - revolver (best pop record ever! i say) super furries - love craft (and well, any others) regina spektor - soviet kitsch ray lamontagne - trouble
and loads more
this week we are be mostly watching
arrested development family guy the simpsons curb your enthusiam
because we all need to laugh, or in the case of the last one, squirm.
i hope you’re all well and once i work out how to get the pictures from my camera to my computer (making my camera pretend hump my computer doesn’t seem to be working) i’ll post some pics too. and there’ll be none of us being gay (well, we’ll see), thanks to the nme for putting that in print. ha.
Hello Everyone I hope all you lovely folk are well. As you may or may not know we have finally finished touring Final Straw. Our last show was in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland in Eddie Murphy’s bar on Saturday the 23rd of July. It took place in a little marque in the beer garden out the back and was a great way to end two years on the road. Thank you all for your amazing support at all the shows we’ve done over the last few years (indeed over the last decade) all around the world. A more wonderful bunch of fans we could not wish for. After a few weeks off to do some washing and pay the odd bill we will start on the new record. We haven’t decided where we’re going to do it yet, but we have narrowed it down to a few studios. We hope to be under way with the actual recording by the end of September and spend not much more than six weeks on the recording itself. The plan is to be well prepared before we go in, so that we can be focused when we start. Rather than go in and jam like some bands. Jamming never worked for us! Also it’s a good way to keep disciplined as we do have time, money and resources now it could be tempting to get complacent. We won’t. We know how long it took to get into this position so we’re not gonna take it for granted. That’s the plan and as Rabbie Burns said “the best-laid schemes o’ mice an ‘men gang aft agley” so we’ll see what happens .Hopefully we’ll do ourselves and you guys proud. Til the next time we see you, we wish you all the love and luck in the world. Gary.x p.s The new Sufjan Stevens record (Illinois) is pure genius.’
