I’m a tv junkie. There, I said it. I spend more time than I should watching tv. Starting with news shows, all shows, from local to world news to bbc news to nhk news to even aljazeera news. I might live in a small and quite different area— compared to the rest— of the United States, but I am way too curious to not want to know what’s going on around the world.
Same goes for other type of shows, drama or comedy. My favourites of recent years, Pushing Daisies. Detroit 187. [both sadly cancelled by number 1 enemy of quality shows…abc] Fringe—though it has been getting curioser and curioser. Harry’s Law, new show and on the brink of cancelation, bummer. The Vampire Diaries, heck they could all be my children, but that show is such a guilty pleasure. House, need I say anything about it? It is brilliant, period. Modern Family, the only sit-com I find watchable, the characters might act silly at times, but they are all intelligent, good people. And lovable, each in his/her own way. Mad Men, a show I love. And just found out the tv station is trying to make it’s creator write two minutes less of show, eliminate two characters per year and add some product placements into the show. They’re willing to pay him thirty million dollars a year if he agress. creator is saying thanks, but no. Good for him. In the meatime, no new season, until they all agree. Don’t tv production companies know it is not a good idea to mess with something that is already great and doing extremely well?
so i mentioned this channel the other day. you can listen live here.
the best radio station in the world. no defined music policy at all. it need only be good. everything lives here: soul, hip hop, indie, electro, world music, experimental, the lot. and they happen during EVERY show, not just in specific segments.each dj is free to play whatever they want for the most part. also some of my very favourite djs too: marc riley, stuart maconie, lauren laverne, matt everett, guy garvey (yes, the elbow frontman has a show on here, it’s THAT good a station!), gideon coe, steve lamacq… and lots more wonderful folk playing wonderful folk (sometimes).
in the last few days alone they have turned me on to tUnE-yArDs, metronomy, faded circus, devon sproule and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
i listen every morning (although i’m in LA so it’s the evening shows i’m hearing. i miss lauren laverne in the morning, aw..) and am always hearing something that thrills me. the radio stations over here (aside from NPR) have a very strict music policy. they will play only one style of music and they play it all damn day. very often the same songs over and over again until even songs you like can become hateful. with 6music you get none of that balls. and the beauty is you can listen to it anywhere on earth from right here on this link. stick it on in the background and let it educate and thrill you like it does me. you’ll never look back.
if we are what we put in our bodies we are, too, what we put in our minds. so feast on the good stuff!!
nothing but love and the biggest hamster of goodwill you can imagine. steve the giant goodwill hamster as he’s known.gL.x
I agree with you, radio stations are awful nowadays, same people, same songs over and over. That’s why I’d given up on them, spending many years without listening to the radio. Then, I bought a new car…and it came with Sirius radio and was very happy for about five months. Then it all started sounding the same. Same people, same songs, over and over. Nowadays, I either listen to wvum radio—the University of Miami radio station which is quite good actually. Or Radio Pepito, on the internet, which is terrific—odd name though. And, BBC6 is very, very good as you say, been listening to them for some time now.
Song of the Day- Gold- Interference (from the Once soundtrack)
This is one of my favorite songs from the incredible movie, Once, and it isn’t even performed by the stars. The song is absolutely gorgeous and seemed appropriate for the gray and dreary day we’re having where I am.
Quite right, loved the movie and the soundtrack too, and this particular piece is so beatiful.
here it is… my new favourite song. know very little about them yet. was listening to 6music on line, as i do every day, and this came on. knocked my tiny ear-socks off!!
and later that day……
so i looked them up and it seems to be the work of one woman, merril garbus. have just bought her first album ‘bird-brains’ and am very much looking forward to listening to it and the new one out soon with this song, Gangsta, on it. new things to love! this is what life is!
Quite odd music this lady writes/plays. Beautiful too. Just bought her cd.
Gary, Gary, you know, if you ever retired from making music or/and singing, you could work for a record company reviewing and recommending new music. I’m pretty sure you’d raise the sales of many an artist.
Re-blog if you love having hard copies of CD's and you hope music doesn't turn completely digital.
If I were a praying person…one of the things I’d pray for would be for cd’s to not go out the way of the dinosaur. Heck, I’d love to see vinyl records come back. Music is such a sensual experience - no, I’m not talking sensual as in sex, but as having to do with the senses - you hear it, but if you have a cd, you can touch it, and with liner notes you can read it too. The cover art…is just that…art. So, it is a complete experience. Not anymore, when it’s done is a click of the mouse and voila, the music is yours. But…it is so…clinical.
I know this ‘blog’ of mine is about things I love. I truly believe there is too much negative energy floating around already. And I also believe that our thoughts, especially when outwardly expressed, do have a power of their own.
To talk about politics, it’s at best….controversial. So, normally, that is not something I talk about, unless I am amongst very close friends. And this, coming from a very political person. [talk at home revolves around politics everyday, and we like it that way]
Today, while on my usual search for what’s going on in the world of politics, I read a comment which…I find way too good to just leave behind. So, I am posting it here. Infllammatory you say? Yes. But…I agree with what it says 100%. So be it.
WHEN DO YOU GET MAD? SHOULD WE TRUST ANOTHER REPUBLICAN IN OFFICE AGAIN? You didn’t get mad when an estimated 18 000 US Citizens loose their lives every year because they had inadequate care and no health insurance. You didn’t get mad when we gave people who had more money than they could spend, the filthy rich, over a trillion dollars in tax breaks. You didn’t get mad when lack of oversight and regulations from the Bush Administration caused US Citizens to lose 12 trillion dollars in investments, retirement, and home values. You didn’t get mad when Bush rang up 10 trillion dollars in combined budget and current account deficits. You didn’t get mad when we let a major US city, New Orleans, drown You didn’t get mad when GOP Joe Barton (rep. Texas) apologized to BP for BP having to pay people that were affected, displaced by the oil spill . You didn’t get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and appointed a President. You didn’t get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate Energy policy and push us to invade Iraq. You didn’t get mad that at the end of the BUSH presidency we were loosing 750 000 jobs a MONTH ( month of feb. 2011, we gained 200 000 non farm jobs under President Obama. Source: US dept. of labor ) You didn’t get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us. You didn’t get mad when we spent over 800 billion (and counting) on said illegal war. You didn’t get mad when Bush borrowed more money from foreign sources than the previous 42 Presidents combined. You didn’t get mad when over 10 billion dollars in cash just disappeared in Iraq . You didn’t get mad when you found out we were torturing people!!!! You didn’t get mad when since 1964 some 400 000 people lost their lives in the US because of GUNS supported by republicans you didn’t get mad when Bush embraced trade and outsourcing policies that shipped 6 million American jobs out of the country. You didn’t get mad when the government was illegally wiretapping Americans. You didn’t get mad when as a result of of the reckless BUSH adm. harm done to the country is so massive , we migth never be able to recover from this one.. No…..You finally got mad when a black man was elected President and decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick.
I don’t know who wrote this, but, in the event, of a million chance the person who wrote this reads it here…my sincere thanks for such a great comment.
